Why we publish this, and who writes it

This is an editorial resource on stability and storage: what a date printed on a container actually promises, how that date is established from measurements taken over months and years, and the specific ways the conditions a material is kept in can quietly make the date untrue.

Why this exists

A printed date is a conditional statement. It says that a material kept in a particular way will still meet a particular description on a particular day. The date survives the journey from the study that produced it to the shelf where it is read. The conditions very often do not: they are one line of small print, easy to skip, and they are the half of the statement that decides whether the date is true.

Storage fails quietly, and in ways that look reasonable at the time: keeping small containers in the refrigerator door because they fit there, moving contents into a cleaner container, opening a cold container straight away, trusting that an overnight power cut was probably fine. None of these changes the date on the label. Each of them can change whether the date still describes the contents.

The guide on the front page is written for small settings, where there is one refrigerator and no stability department to fall back on. The practices it draws on were developed for large regulated operations, but the reasoning is not regulatory. It is about what a measurement taken in the past can honestly say about a container in the present.

How it is written

The guide is written to be read once and used afterwards. It states what a given kind of evidence can establish and, in the same breath, what it cannot. Where a practice has a cheaper version that suits a small setting, the guide says so rather than pretending that every reader has a qualified storage room and a mapped cold chain.

It is deliberately general. It does not describe, recommend, compare or make any claim about any material, item, treatment or substance, and it never tells a reader what to do with one.
